More than a decade after ending his athletic career by leaving the soccer team at his rural South Carolina college, Jay was channel-surfing while up in the wee hours of the morning comforting a crying newborn (his second). Expecting Japanese soccer, he found Australian rules football. It took less than a quarter to begin following the flow of play and another half to begin wondering how he’d missed such a wonderful sport for so long.
The next week, he sought and found a local club, the North Carolina Tigers. Three years, one interstate move, one (more) baby, and one pandemic later, he’s playing with the Dockers, alternating as needed between the forward and defensive lines and seeking to improve his (meager) fitness, footy skills, and tactical awareness with every passing week.
